Midwest coalition calls on President to support fair elections bill

Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2009

Joining with partners throughout the Midwest, the League of Women Voters of Ohio is encouraging President Barack Obama to support the Fair Elections Now Act.

The letter cites the importance of the soon-to-be-reintroduced Fair Elections Now Act, sponsored by Senators Richard Durbin and Arlen Specter. Durbin and Specter introduced a similar bill in 2007 and will introduce it in the new Congressional session this spring.

The League and fellow members of the Midwest Democracy Network state in their letter, “The Fair Elections Now Act would go a long way toward ending the pay-to-play political system that dominates our political process. By giving candidates for Congress an opportunity to seek office without having to rely on those who can afford to write or bundle $2,300 campaign contributions, the Fair Elections Now Act supercharges small-dollar contributions, and in turn, empowers millions of Americans, regardless of socioeconomic status, to participate in our democracy in a meaningful way."

Common Cause has helpful summaries and links to the bill that was introduced in 2007.
