Coalition wins health care reforms in state budget
Friday, Jul. 17, 2009
After a six-month campaign, and over a year of laying groundwork, Ohio Consumers for Health Coverage won four major health insurance reforms in the individual insurance market that will result in nearly 100,000 adults securing health coverage.
The League of Women Voters of Ohio is a member of the coalition.
The reforms include:
- Premiums in the Open Enrollment program for people with pre-existing conditions will be lowered over the next three years.
- Young adults up to age 28 can be insured on their parents' policy, but coverage must be continuous.
- Employers of 10 or more will be required to offer their employees an opportunity to use pre-tax dollars to pay for their health care (cafeteria plan).
- Insurance companies will be required to report more data about how much they spend on health care vs. administration and profit.
